Online payments, also known as digital transactions, are financial exchanges done electronically without the use of physical cash. These transactions are a key part of the Government of India’s Digital India programme, which aims to transform the country into a "Faceless, Paperless, Cashless" society.
Common Methods of Online Payment
There are several ways to perform digital transactions:
- Credit and Debit Cards: These can be used to pay at billing counters in shops or on online websites for shopping and ticket bookings.
- Net Banking: This involves using a web browser on a computer or phone to access a bank's website to transfer funds or pay bills.
- Digital Wallets and UPI: These are mobile apps that securely store your bank and card information, allowing you to pay without carrying physical cards.
How Digital Wallets Work
Digital wallets (such as Google Pay, Paytm, and BHIM UPI) are among the most convenient ways to make online payments. They allow you to transfer money in two primary ways:
- Phone Number: You can enter the mobile number of the receiver, provided they also use a digital wallet.
- QR Code: You can use your phone’s camera to scan a unique, square black-and-white code displayed at a shop or by another person to send money instantly.
Benefits of Online Payments
Using digital payment methods offers several advantages over traditional cash:
- Speed and Convenience: Transactions are generally faster and more convenient than using physical cash.
- Expense Tracking: Digital records make it easy to keep track of your monthly spending.
- Safety: They are safer than physical wallets because they have security features to prevent misuse. If your mobile device is stolen, you can even disable your digital wallet remotely.
Safety Best Practices
To protect your money while making online payments, you should follow these safety measures:
- Strong Passwords: Set a strong password for your apps and change it every 6 to 12 months.
- Protect Credentials: Never share your password, MPIN, or OTP (One Time Password) with anyone; banks and payment apps will never ask for these.
- Network Security: Avoid making online payments while connected to public Wi-Fi or open networks.
- Sign Out: Always sign out of the website or close the payment app immediately after you finish your transaction.
